The Nameless Horror: Price, Insanity And The Race... →
seancregan: I’ve been terribly quiet recently (working and/or installing a shower), but here’s my two cents (which at 35% means only 0.7 cents of it are mine, but hey) on ebooks, value and pricing. Specifically as it applies to you and I, knocking our shit out for people to buy via Kindle and Nook and LCD…

Martin on his female characters
Facebook question for GRRM: What was your intent in providing such female characters of strength in a genre that typically reduces them to witches, wives, and whores?
George R. R. Martin: To be fair, I have my share of witches, wives, and whores. But I try to make them fully fleshed out human witches, wives, and whores. It all goes back to what I said earlier about common humanity. It seems strange that I have to say this, as a sort of weirdly radical statement, but women are people and they are driven by the same desires that drive men, I think. A desire for respect and power, a desire to protect your children. Greed for money, for acclaim, everyone wants to be loved. It is all common humanity. I just try to write my female characters as I write my males characters. I do take into account it is a very patriarchal society. They are limited to certain roles, some of them fit comfortably within the roles their Westerosi society assigned them. And some of them cannot fit comfortably into those roles, and therefore encounter a certain amount of rejection, or tension, or ridicule as they try to pursue their own dreams or as they frustrate their own dreams. All this is great, all this is conflict, it is character tension, it is what story is all about, the human heart in conflict with itself once again. One of the things that pleases me to no end is that I have so many female readers. They do write me, all the time, that they do like my female characters, and I am very pleased with it.

No Surprise. Oakland Police Chief Lied to... →
wilwheaton: After the October 25th raid on Frank Ogawa Plaza / Oscar Grant Park, and before the November 2nd General Strike, a campaign by all the powers that be in Oakland had started to discredit anyone and anything associated with Occupy Oakland. And so, to no one’s particular surprise, in the emails poured over by KTVU reporters was found a note that might as well have caused the...

Untitled: Four months and counting. →
whatthehellxbox: Picture the scene, it is September 16th, I’m home from work after a long commute, I’ve had a bite to eat and I’m sitting down to check my email, follow up on a few things, hang out with my kids, maybe be a massive nerd and do some coding. I opened up my email account and had an unwelcome surprise.

dailymeh: This is what comes up if you google “literally”. Note that the second sense, universally loathed by language purists, has started creeping into dictionaries. At this point, literally is a dead horse that has been beaten one too many times. The purists have pointed out the illogic and…

A Song of Ice and Fire fan fiction by Gingerhaze
gingerhaze: Once upon a time there were some Starks. They were awesome. The Lannisters were being butts so the Starks were like, “Stop.” So they did! The Lannisters apologized for their mean behavior. Everyone was friends and had a big party. No one got killed or raped. The end. Did Sansa marry a handsome and kind prince?

The Squeaky Wheel Doesn't Get the Grease
teamvalkyrieftw: So recently I blogged about Women and Pay Negotations and how that’s kind of a shitbag of shit? Well, WaPo agrees. Our recent Catalyst report, The Myth of the Ideal Worker, reveals that women do ask for raises and promotions. They just don’t get as much in return. This, again, forever. This is why I so constantly say that I love engineering, but I hate people. Original Post

Why I Hate Android
parislemon: Why do I hate Android? It’s definitely one of the questions I get asked most often these days. And most of those that don’t ask probably assume it’s because I’m an iPhone guy. People see negative take after negative take about the operating system and label me as “unreasonable” or “biased” or worse. I should probably explain. Believe it or not, I actually don’t hate Android....
